Residencies
Jennifer Teets & Margarida Mendes
Jennifer Teets and Margarida Mendes will be in residence at PARSE NOLA April 2 - 16. They will be in New Orleans to conduct research for their ongoing project, The World in Which We Occur, a curatorial research-based entity that explores themes concerned with artistic inquiry, philosophy of science, and ecology. Most recently they produced Bodily Coalitions, probing the intersection of critical feminist practices with the reality of biological reproduction and environmental transformations in today’s society at the Nottingham Contemporary, UK.
During their time in New Orleans they are interested in engaging with organizations and individuals who are considering the impact of climate change on the Gulf South. They co-lead an online study group titled Matter in Flux that will have a ground edition in NOLA. Their residencies are funded in part by the Foundation for Arts Initiatives. More information here.
Casey Ruble
Casey Ruble will be in residence at PARSE NOLA June 7 – July 5. This will be her fourth visit to New Orleans to continue her research on Eulalie Mandeville, which began in June 2017.
Ruble’s forthcoming experimental documentary, Eulalie, is a meditation on family, race, and a young nation’s struggle to define itself. The film will look at the life of Eulalie Mandeville de Marigny, an Afro-Creole woman, who was born in the 1770s to an enslaved mother and the largest white Creole landowner in Louisiana and who went on to become a successful entrepreneur and one of the wealthiest black women in New Orleans. She once owned the property where PARSE NOLA is located. In October 2018 Ruble gave a presentation on this project at The Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present conference in New Orleans and recently she was awarded a 2019 Monroe Fellows Research Grant from the New Orleans Center for Gulf South. Public Programming Announcement
PARSE NOLA is discontinuing programming at The Engine Room. We are incredibly grateful to have had the use of this space for past year where we produced three exhibitions: facts! (our 5th Annual Southeast Louisiana Juried Student Exhibition) curated by Amanda Sanfilippo , Fighting Weight: Kevin Jerome Everson curated by Maaike Gouwenberg, and Clear, Deep, Dark: Julie Morel curated by Amy Mackie. We also presented seven Practical Advice for the Practicing Artist events (monthly professional development workshops for local artists), as well as a lecture by curator Lauren Ross. PARSE NOLA’s 6th Annual Southeast Louisiana Juried Student Exhibition will be postponed until we secure another exhibition space for this initiative but stay tuned for a new location for our Practical Advice for the Practicing Artist workshops.
